Your Decorating Dilemmas Solved! (Part 6)

DTRMoi asks: What perfect timing. We just purchased a home where one bedroom has a Murphy bed. It’s on the longest wall of the guest bedroom. It absolutely consumes the room. Should it stay (and should I find some way to neutralize the massive wall of white cabinetry) or should it go? For now, we just shut the door and pretend it’s not there.

Annie replies: I think that you have already made your decision! The only reasons to keep it is if you need the extra bed and the room cannot accommodate a regular bed. If you need the space and the bed, then you can certainly do some things to minimize the impact of the massive white cabinet. But I think it will be more of a hassle than just getting the thing out of there. I would list it on Craigslist and take the money to refinish that room the way you want to, and splurge on some new bed linens that you love.

I watch hgtv a lot and recently there have been makeovers where the owners use of quilts was disparaged as being out of style and made a bedroom look shoddy . I love quilts but am 72 years old. Is their use less style less. I want to keep up with the times.

Hi, Ann! We love HGTV, but we have to admit that we disagree on this one. We think quilts are a fantastic way to bring a bit of color, pattern, and texture, and a layer of midweight warmth, to the bedroom. Plus, a good-quality quilt never goes out of style! Because quilting is an centuries-old technique, it tends to have an inherently vintage feel. So the key is to aim for balance in your room design.

If your furniture and other decor are vintage style, try a quilt that’s a bit more streamlined, like one of these:

But if your furniture and accents are more modern, you can go full-on retro, like one of these:

Thank you so much for “showing me the way”. I want it gone but my better half likes the idea of having an office with a ‘hidden bed’. Perhaps your excellent suggestion of Craig’s List will change his mind.
