Why This Works: A Study in Comfort

How to create a cozy space for curling up with a book, a cocktail – or both.

Ever look at a beautiful room and wonder how did they do that – and, more importantly, how can I do something similar at home? We break down how to outfit a study so that it offers all the elegant essentials.
01 The power of paper.
Add warmth to a more modern decorating style with a grasscloth wallpaper. The natural grasses provide a tactile depth and richness to the walls that help make the whole room feel cozy.
02 Mix it up.
Don’t be intimidated by patterns. Find a unifying element like color and vary the pattern size in a trio from a smaller scale, to medium, to a large-scale print pillow to make it work for you.
03 Go mobile.
There’s something so charming about a bar cart – or tea trolley – on wheels. Keep it minimally styled with a beautiful ice bucket, some of your favorite (and sturdy) glasses, and your favorite mixers and spirits.
04 A clever swap.
If you don’t have space for a traditional side table, try using a wooden garden-style stool instead. It doubles as an extra seat and is easy to move where it’s needed.
05 Play with pattern.
The artistic dots and dashes that are reminiscent of Kuba textiles on this rug help create a sense of movement in the room. The pattern helps lead your eye through the space.
06 Sophisticated comfort.
Look mom, no arms! This oversized modern chair can easily fit more than one person thanks to its arm-less design. Add some ambient lighting overhead and you’ve got an ideal spot to curl up with a good book.
