Along with yet another bone-chilling, snowy week in the Northeast comes the eternal dilemma: what should we binge-watch on Netflix while curled up under a cozy throw and sipping hot chocolate? In preparation for the release of season three of House of Cards later this month (February 27, to be exact), we’re looking back on some of our favorite moments—and interior designs—from seasons one and two. Though we could wax rhapsodic about Claire’s dreamy walk-in closet; Adam’s easygoing, modern-boho loft; and Gavin’s city-slick and streamlined, black, white, and gray apartment, today we’re taking a closer look at one of our favorite spaces: Frank and Claire’s bedroom.
True to everything Underwood, Frank and Claire’s bedroom looks expensive, traditional with a twist, and impeccably tailored—the ultimate sanctuary for the ultimate power couple. It’s a textbook approach to transitional decorating, with a neutral palette, minimal accessories, layers of textured neutral fabrics, and a mix of clean-lined, masculine furniture in mostly walnut and chocolate hues.
The warm sand tone on the walls, sheets, and quilt keep the sleek style from reading cold, especially among all that wood, leather, and chrome. For even more softness against those hard edges, Frank and Claire have a plush wool area rug in a rich brownish grey that extends past the edges of the bed (and that fabulous lattice headboard! And incredible leather bench!) in all directions. The single pop of color in the room comes courtesy of the bed’s decorative pillows, including a pair in a bold graphic print and another set in a smooth, silky sea blue. This provides a bit of visual contrast without a bunch of fussy accessories, and puts the focus squarely on the simple sophistication of the bedroom design.
To get the look of Claire and Frank’s House of Cards bedroom, opt for chic, high-end furniture and just a handful of accessories. Add in tailored, tone-on-tone neutral bed linens in contrasting textures, and forgo the window panels for wood shutters. Hang a frameless mirror and a trio of black-and-white photographs in simple black frames with bright white mats, and you’ve got your very own power lair. Now, where did we leave that YSL handbag?
