Quite possibly the prettiest town in the Northeast, this island is pure summer.
In each installment of “Places we’re dreaming about,” we offer you a mental escape to one of our favorite destinations. Exploring from afar, we share special spots for you to bookmark for future travel—plus some transporting cocktail recipes from local mixologists that you can mix up at at home while plotting your next trip.
Beloved for its unspoiled beaches, gray-shingled architecture, and historic downtown, Nantucket is the quintessential summer vacation destination. With a profusion of climbing roses and window boxes so perfect you’d think the shops were competing with one another, the whole town feels like it’s in bloom come summer. Strolling the cobblestone streets and creaky docks, visitors feel like they’ve stepped back to a simpler time.

Best known for their hand-loomed blankets, table linens, and other textiles, this home store and weaving collective has been in business since 1968. You can shop the beautifully curated selection of home goods from their site for curbside pickup, but once they reopen, don’t miss out on the chance to see the weavers in action on the second floor: It’s mesmerizing!
Since it opened in 2012, CRU oyster bar has quickly become an island favorite. Set right on the dock in downtown Nantucket, CRU has a view of all the sailboats and yachts docked beyond. “With the windows opened up, it almost feels like you are on a boat in the harbor,” says proprietor Carlos Hidalgo. The restaurant’s brass accents, preppy stripes, and navy and yellow palette reinforce the nautical theme.
Islanders and “washashores” alike love CRU for the delicious food and drinks, the magical location, and for the excellent people watching. The two bars are packed most nights with a lively buzz of guests sipping Old World wines and CRU’s signature drinks. “All of our cocktails are meant to be enjoyed with food, so there’s a harmony and simplicity to them,” says Hidalgo. The restaurant is open for takeaway service and hopes to be serving guests outside soon. Until then, shake up one of CRU’s summer cocktails at home! Both of these recipes appear in the restaurant’s cookbook CRU Oyster Bar Nantucket Cookbook.
