Welcome to “Places we’re dreaming about,” our new virtual travel series. In each installment, we’ll offer you a mental escape to one of our favorite cities. Exploring from afar, we’ll share special spots for you to bookmark for future travel—plus some transporting cocktail recipes from local mixologists that you can mix up at at home while plotting your next trip.
Candy-colored, coastal, and loaded with charm, Charleston is one of the top travel destinations in the South for good reason. Layers of history are visible along each of its cobblestone streets, but behind its historic facades lies a lively, modern city full of style, culture, and culinary excitement.
Since it opened on Upper King Street in 2013, Prohibition has been one of the top spots to sip a cocktail in Charleston. “We’re very approachable and casual, but with a real commitment to service and quality,” says beverage director and co-owner Jim McCourt.
McCourt is also serious about his drinks: Prohibition’s bar is stocked with nearly 900 bottles and its menu features 30 signature cocktails, which are all “twists or a modern update on classics.” The bar’s interiors nod to the 1920s and the name conjures a bygone speakeasy, but McCourt says “there’s no secret knock, no password required: Our door is always wide open.” Until Prohibition reopens later this summer, you can try one of McCourt’s creations at home.
