Once upon a time, hotels were not glamorous. They were bland, business- like settings draped in maroon and beige. Boutique hotel pioneer Kit Kemp saw a gap in the market and has spent 30+ years creating a wildly successful empire of stylish hotels. How does she do it? Let’s find out:

Hotels

After being denied 14 times for a bank loan, Kit Kemp and her husband/business partner, Tim, defied the odds and opened their first hotel in 1985. The Dorset Square Hotel was “the first country house hotel in London, and it was a hit,” says Kit. Eight more boutique properties in London follow.

Books

With over 30+ years in the business, and making headlines everywhere for transforming ordinary spaces into magical, personality-packed interiors, Kit wanted to share her knowledge with the rest of the world. She’s written four books: A Living Space (2012), Every Room Tells a Story (2015), Design Thread (2017), and most recently Design Secrets: How to style any space and make it your own (2021).

Giving Back

Near and dear to Kit’s heart are two charities she actively participates in. She’s a trustee for the Heritage London Trust, a charity that rescues historic buildings and monuments. “Whilst I spend a great deal of my time creating new build projects, it is also so very important to cherish the heritage we have,” Kit says. She’s also a trustee of Fine Cell Work, a charity that trains British prisoners in high-quality, paid needlework.

A Family Affair

Not only does Kit run The Firmdale Group with her husband, but her two younger daughters— Willow and Minnie—joined the firm in 2012. Willow heads all brand collaborations, and Minnie works as a designer, revamping existing hotel rooms and designing the interiors of Firmdale’s second NYC-based hotel, The Whitby.

Going Green

The Crosby Street hotel was the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified hotel in New York City for its sustainable approach to energy, lighting, water, and more. “We have chickens on the roof, bicycle stands outside, and we tried to make everything as locally as possible!” says Kit.
