There we were, enjoying an afternoon smoothie and scrolling through decorating photos on some of our favorite home design sites, when we had a hold-the-phones moment. This living room, featured on Elle Décor and part of an incredible town house renovation by Leroy Street Studio architects and designer James Aman, is about as good as it gets. Shall we count the ways?
The scale of the room and its pieces is the first thing that caught our eye. It’s the perfect balance of the big and small, the short and long—from the outsize ceiling fixtures, the space-filling wall art and mirror, and the tall lamps and sculptures to the low coffee tables and benches and the ginkgo-leaf bronze chair by artist Claude Lalanne. The linen-and-metal rugs in a dove grey are the foundation of this neutral palette, with its mix of ivory, butter, and soft greys offset by the sable velvet banquette and the pops of color in the painting and accessories. But our favorite part might just be the play of textures. Soft velvets, brocades, and faux fur are juxtaposed with hard metallic and plenty of glass accents, for a look that’s streamlined, upscale, and plush—an urban glam haven.
