We could tell you all about how designer Michelle Chang’s jewelry makes a terrific holiday gift, whether you’re on the hunt for a smart pair of geometric stocking-stuffer earrings, a whimsical pendant necklace, some cheeky cuff links, or a romantic, diamond-studded bangle. We could even think of several guys and gals on our list who would love her sleek, modern, touch-of-class-and-a-dash-of-irreverence designs.
But gifts, schmifts. We’re picking up a few of Michelle’s rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings for ourselves, and we’re not even a little bit guilty. Scroll down, and you’ll see why.
Michelle, a New York City native, studied fine art in college, and started out in her career as an interior designer and an editorial illustrator. But in 2007, when the economy started its downhill slide, the self-described “accessories whore” decided it might be wise to start a second business. Recalling some metalworking classes she’d taken, she thought, “Nothing compares to the satisfaction and affinity that I feel when I make jewelry.” She opened an Etsy shop with a small, tightly edited collection. It was an overnight success, and within a year, she was able to devote herself full-time to jewelry design. She now works out of her home studio in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in L.A., with the help of just two assistants.
Although Michelle considers everything—from a fence to a flower or a fish—a source of inspiration, we’re most excited about her geometric pieces, like her puffy triangle earrings and domed bangles, and her animal jewelry. She covers the gamut here, so fans of birds, foxes, and elephants will be equally pleased as lovers of bees, penguins, and octopi (yes, octopi). The bottom line: Michelle Chang has a fabulous piece of jewelry for you, so get shopping.
