Artisan Crush: Mashka Jewelry

We wouldn’t have guessed that a tourist haven like Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco would boast a lovely and original jewelry shop, but as soon as we walked into Mashka, a small boutique tucked into the corner of the venerable shopping destination, we knew we’d stumbled onto something special.

Serbian-born designer Mashka uses traditional European craftsmanship and an organically influenced, Eastern aesthetic to handcraft necklaces, bracelets and cuffs, earrings, and rings that are equal parts tough and feminine. We love the undulating shapes, especially of her Pods collection, which mixes silver and gold vermeil with gemstones in a wide range of vibrant colors, and her mixed-metal pieces, which have an edgy, sculptural quality.

We’re also smitten with her store design, which has a pretty but not precious retro vibe, thanks to vintage display cases, reclaimed wood tables and shelves, vintage art print on the walls, and thrifted hardcover books. (For a bit of decorating flavor, check out sfgirlbybay’s photos of Mashka’s North Beach store.)

Lucky for us all, Mashka also sells online, so we don’t even have to get out of our pj’s to make some additions to our jewelry box.
