We get that as the leaves fall and nature’s bright colors fade, the timing seems right for showcasing layers of neutrals. And we love neutrals—we really do—but at this time of year, when everything is starting to feel a bit drab, we can’t resist employing a big burst of color to lighten our moods. That’s why, when thinking about the perfect outfit that can go from fall into winter, we went bold, bright, and playful.
Our starting point was this jaw-dropping embroidered shawl, featuring an Indian geometric pattern in an array of gorgeous fall- and winter-friendly hues. It looks equally chic tossed over the shoulders or double-wrapped around the neck like a scarf. And with such a varied color palette to choose from, it was a cinch to build an outfit around it.
As a break from all the skinny silhouettes that have been ubiquitous for the past several seasons, we went in a more relaxed direction. We topped distressed, straight-leg jeans with a boyfriend button-down shirt in classic white, a cashmere V-neck sweater in mustard, and a biker vest with a fun double-lapel detail. Add in a neutral tote, a pair of hunter green loafers, and accessories that pick up on the rich tones of the shawl, and you’ve got an effortless outfit that works for causal day at the office, a weekend road trip, an afternoon out with friends, and even a plane ride (hopefully to some enviable vacation destination).
