In the spring and summer, we practically live in T-shirts and tanks—the swingier, breezier, and more drapey, the better. So is it any wonder we’re all over the latest collection from Amour Vert, the four-year-old sustainable-clothing brand from French-born designer/creative director Linda Balti and her CEO husband, Christoph Frehsee?
Linda and Christoph, who both came from defense-industry backgrounds, met at a trade show in Abu Dhabi. A few years later, while searching for a new business venture and reading about the impact some of the world’s largest industries have on the environment, they had a lightbulb moment. Fashion, they discovered, was the second-most-polluting industry in the world, but few options were available to the eco-conscious consumer.
While scouring shops and boutiques during her travels, Linda realized that sustainable clothing that was also beautiful, stylish, affordable for everyday use, and meant to be seen beyond the confines of the yoga studio was almost impossible to come by. So she and Christoph developed their own company to create contemporary, long-lasting, reasonably priced fashion that looks chic and feels incredible against the skin, all while leaving a minimal environmental footprint.
Amour Vert —French for “green love”—crafts T-shirts, tanks, pants, dresses, skirts, rompers, and more that are exquisitely soft and have a beautiful, body-flattering drape. Thanks to fabrics like linen, cotton, Modal, and custom blends that incorporate recycled polyester and wood fibers, Amour Vert’s clothing not only moves like a dream, but also walks the talk. Each piece is designed and manufactured in the United States, using nontoxic dyes and more efficient washing processes, to help save water. Designs include classic cool-French-girl nautical stripe long-sleeve T-shirts, printed racerback tanks, easy sleeveless button-downs, and shirtdresses and tee dresses you’ll find a thousand occasions to wear. Our current favorites include Amour Vert’s classic V-neck T-shirt, which is perfect half-tucked into a pair of skinny jeans; featherweight tie-waist linen tees to top twill shorts for a trip to the beach or a flirty circle skirt for brunch with the family; and a blousy, tie-front silk dress in the most skin-flattering shade of blue.
If you need one more reason to love Amour Vert, consider this: for every T-shirt purchased, the company, through its partner American Forests, plants a tree in North America. By next year, they’ll have planted 100,000 trees.
Pick up Amour Vert clothing at Nordstrom, Revolve, or Rodale’s, or visit their flagship store in the Hayes Valley of San Francisco.
