Home Everyday Exuberance Tulip Fever

If the ridiculous number of tulip photos we Fresh American staffers have been posting on our Facebook pages, tweeting, and pinning on our Pinterest boards is any indication, we’re just a teensy bit excited that the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming. And what’s not to love about these happy, showy, rainbow-colored blossoms?

2006 Nevit Dilman

The tulip, a perennial bulb belonging to the 100-plus species Tulipa, is a native of Central Asia, though it’s been expertly cultivated by the Dutch since the 1500s. Tulips are so popular as garden plants in the United States that towns nationwide host annual celebrations. In our neck of the woods, Albany, New York’s Tulip Festival honors the spring blooming of more than 100,000 bulbs into a riot of color all over the city. The festival includes live performances and games, and even the coronation of a Tulip Queen—chosen through a “competitive interview process”—and a Royal Tulip Ball (we kid you not).

We’re holding a tulip fest of sorts right here at Fresh American, and offering you a chance to win a gorgeous Embroidered Hem White/Pink sheet set and a pair of Vintage Tulips pillowcasesvalued at nearly $300! The giveaway starts on Monday, May 14, and ends at 11:59 p.m. EST on Wednesday, May 16. To enter, simply go to the comments below and tell us where you like to display tulips in your home. (View the full rules here.)

Congratulations to our winner, Marry from Pennsylvania!

Living in Sub-tropical South Florida means only store bought tulips! I “plant” them in my Fiesta Ware pitcher and they spill out like a waterfall. I also like to write guest’s names on the leaves and place them at the top of a dinner plate as place cards. Pam pblapere@att.net

I’ve always loved tulips more than any other flower. I love to put a big bunch in my foyer, so that it’s the first thing visitors – and family – see when walking in the door… Happy!

After living in the Netherlands for 4 years I grew to love tulips even more than I already did. Now I can’t afford as many so I have to limit them to the dining room table.

Tulips have been my favorite flower for as long as I can remember. They come in such a wonderful array of colors, so vibrant and cheerful. Anyone who knows me knows that I forgoe roses in place of tulips. Whenever I have been fortunate to receive flowers, they always include tulips somewhere in the arrangement. A client just sent me a beautiful pink tulips and purple/blue iris arrangement…how did he know? lol Around my home I find they brighten up any room I put them in. Whether it be the living room, dining area, bedroom, even the bathroom! And during the chilly months when they are hard to find, I take out my silk tulips and they remind me of Spring and the warmer days to come.

I love tulips in my children’s bedrooms (even though they are little boys, they LOVE fresh flowers in their rooms). I also put tulips in my classroom, where the children ALWAYS have access to fresh, beautiful smelling flowers! Such joy for children!

I love tulips of all colors in pretty glass vases in the middle of the family room where they can be seen from all corners of the house, and on the kitchen table or countertop. A tulip print on a shower curtain and bathroom accessories can be so cheerful. And framed tulip prints are beautiful just about anywhere. …but how nice would it be to awaken to tulips embroidered on the bedlinens!

I have one child and it’s a daughter. And who knew she would have a career in the Air Force? I surely didn’t! Her favorite flower is a “tulip.” Everytime I look upon a tulip see it’s beauty and it reminds me of my daughter! Currently I have tulips on the kitchen island. But which ever room I choose to put them in makes it a very “special” place! 🙂
