Stripe Out: How to Paint a Striped Accent Wall

Wallpaper can be a fantastic decorating element, but it’s also a commitment. And what do you do if you can’t find the exact color palette or pattern you want?  The answer, style lovers, is paint-it-yourself wall decor.  This is our kitchen at Fresh American HQ, and we selected our colors—shades of pink and gray— to match our sassy chairs, tattersall rug, checkerboard floor, and antique Belgian cupboard.  No color was left unaccounted for!

For this accent wall’s updated ticking stripe we penciled the pattern on the wall, then applied painter’s tape along the markings.

We covered each stripe with the color of our choice and allowed the entire wall to dry.

Finally, we removed the tape (at an angle, to prevent peeling of all that handiwork) and voilà—an exuberant pattern where no one color steals center stage.

Love the look! I would have taken it one step further and changed the switch plate cover and light switch to white.
