Frozen Nirvana

On a recent trip, Annie and her intrepid staff came across something so good, so original, so unforgettable, they had to share it with all of you, our dear readers. What was this life-changing product? Ice cream. Not just any frozen dessert, mind you, but the small-batch, handmade-from-local-goodness, total deliciousness of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.

With flavors like Bangkok Peanut, Brambleberry Crisp, Queen City Cayenne, Whiskey & Pecans, and Juniper and Lemon Curd, we knew that we had to dive right in to a very important experiment to suss out Jeni’s top flavors. In our highly scientific way, we divided the contestants into three groups:

  • The Not So Basics (Ugandan Vanilla Bean, Dark Chocolate, and Black Coffee)
  • The Fruity Tooties (Cherry Lambic Sorbet, Lemon & Blueberries frozen yogurt, and Wildberry Lavender)
  • The Extra! Extras! (Salted Caramel, Brown Butter Almond Brittle, and Pistachio Honey).

As you can see from these photos, the work was long and grueling, and required extensive do-overs—all in the name of absolute accuracy, of course. In the end, we crowned Black Coffee, Lemon & Blueberries, and Brown Butter Almond Brittle the winners . . . but we might just need to taste a few more flavors to be sure.
