Behind the Scenes: Fabric Shopping at Osgood’s

Here at Fresh American HQ, we’re in the midst of photo shoots for Annie’s new fall bedding, rug, and accessory lines. This means a near-constant need for furniture and props that complement the styles and color palettes of her newest textiles. As is often the case, Annie knows exactly how she wants to style the new products, but the ready-made décor and accessories at her usual sources don’t always fit the bill. So she and her visual styling and design team took a field trip to Osgood’s in Springfield, Massachusetts, for a daylong shopping fiesta for fabric, sewing notions, and supplies.

For more than 60 years, Osgood’s has been bringing the Northeast a huge—and we mean mind-bogglingly enormous—selection of fabrics for home décor, upholstery, clothing, bridal design, and crafting. They stock an almost unimaginable array of designs from manufacturers around the world. Just to give you a bit of perspective, this is the sight Annie and her crew were treated to when they first walked into the store:

Armed with sketches and reference photos of items they’re planning to create (hangings for a tester bed, for example), or remake (an upholstery face-lift for an antique armchair), Annie and her intrepid designers got cracking on their shopping adventure.

They checked out upholstery fabrics, materials for window hangings and custom bedcovers, and fun, colorful fabrics for smaller décor items like throw pillows.

And while they brought along some visual aids from the new collections, ultimately, the decisions came down to what caught Annie’s discerning eye and passed her quality test.

Then it was off to the notions section to pick up thread, closures, and trims.
