We hit the local farmers’ market to experience the very bearable brightness of being.

This is our favorite time of the year for flowers, when the farmers’ markets are overflowing with fresh, gorgeous blooms in every color imaginable. When they’re local and in season, flowers are at their least expensive, making it easy to liven up any room of the house.

Whether you favor dainty buds or blossoms the diameter of a dessert plate, grab a fistful, pull out your most vibrant vases, and mix and match. Or follow our lead and pack a big, shiny steel planter with a mix of zinnias, impatiens, lantana, trailing petunias, and African daisies, plus coleus for a shot of leafy green. There’s no wrong choice when it comes to brightly colored flowers—except to let the growing season pass you buy.
