Sometimes we’re astounded by all the talent here at Fresh American HQ. Just a couple of weeks ago, on her way to a meeting, Annie breezed by the desk of Katelyn Luczynski-Banks, one of our terrific customer service reps, and did a double-take at the art hanging on her bulletin board. It turns out that Katelyn creates these lighthearted, color-washed pet “impressions” herself, and we couldn’t wait to find out more.
Katelyn, who has always drawn, going all the way back to her little-kid days, was first inspired to create the portraits a few years ago while experimenting with some pastel art of her late dog, Chloe. Her friends spied the work and immediately started asking for versions of their own pets. The result—an impression, as Katelyn calls is—is a whimsical, vibrant, artsy take on the portrait that captures the spirit of the pet without being photo-realistic.
To create the impressions, Katelyn first studies a photo of the pet. “Every pet is different,” she explains, “so I always look for a special feature—crooked ears, a floppy tongue, a sparkle in the eye—and hone in on it and exaggerate it.” She draws a pastel version of the pet, then adds in layers of color, texture, and movement around it. To take the layering up a notch, she digitally enhances the image with graphics software. The final image is printed on canvas.
Katelyn’s pet impressions are one-of-a-kind and a fantastic way to celebrate a favorite pet, and deck out your walls with some original art to boot. They also make awesome holiday gifts for the pet lover, so put your order in now by e-mailing Katelyn at katelynluczynski AT yahoo DOT com.
