I am just back from a week in Milan and Lake Como, where I was absolutely besotted by the Italians’ gift for grates. They make some great grates!
Of course, the need for as many grates as there are does speak to a need for security, but, honestly, they have elevated this unpleasant necessity to a decorative opportunity—and for centuries!
Simple but shapely.
Graceful and stately. Note that the top and bottom grate are different and full of decorative details.
Striking and strong.
Bold and graphic.
Baroque free-form floral.
There is wonderful movement in this one. You can look at it many ways. Look for the pinwheels.
Lovely and lyrical.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
Rocking the octagon.
Not your average quatrefoil pattern.
Bold with blossoms.
Even this industrial door looks better with a great grate.
Restrained and restraining elegance.
Even the cellar grates are gorgeous!
