Samode Palace

A few days into our trip to India, we traveled from Delhi for four and a half hours south into Rajasthan, toward Jaipur, to meet our Dash & Albert rug vendor. It doesn’t look like such a long trip on a map, but when you’re sharing the road with many different types of vehicles—including camels!—it takes a while. The memory of the long and noisy journey  was left immediately behind when we pulled into the ancient arches of the Samode Palace!

The palace is surrounded by lovely manicured gardens and is the most delightful shade of yellow. And I am a big sucker for Mughal arches,  marble, and meals al fresco.

There is exquisite detail at every turn. . . .

Through the arches and into the first of two interior courtyards. My room is the one with the open door.

I entered my room, which was quite grand, but the  pièce de résistance was the bathroom, kitted out in all marble, including the tub, the rail, and the lion-faced spigot! I was blown away and couldn’t wait to take a bath.

As if this wasn’t enough, we were taken farther into the palace, where we saw the formal rooms for which the palace is renowned. And they are breathtaking. Every surface is covered with amazingly beautiful painted patterns, in mouthwatering palettes. I will let the pictures do the talking. . . .

Our indoor/outdoor rug supplier felt we should review our new rug developments in a special place that celebrates India’s rich decorative history.
