Art Smart in Seville: Rompemoldes

During a recent trip to Spain, complete with an architectural tour of Seville—you wouldn’t believe the eye candy!—we came across one of our favorite finds of the entire trip: Rompemoldes, a collective of artists and artisans who are producing some beautiful and inspired work.

Off the Ruiz de Gijón and tucked between the classical architecture of Seville, Rompemoldes is housed in a sleek modern building designed by well-regarded architect Javier Ochoa. Around a large central courtyard are spaces for twenty studios, where craftspeople in a variety of disciplines—ceramics, painting, graphic design, fashion, sculpture, art restoration, graphic design, and even handmade musical instruments—are able to work, share inspiration and ideas, and even collaborate on projects. Most of these artisans have faced financial challenges, so Rompemoldes provides low-cost studio and housing rentals (in the upper floor), allowing them to focus on what matters most: exploration of their unique talents.

And that talent? Impressive is an understatement. Some artisans are preserving traditional art forms, while others are experimenting with thoroughly modern forms of creativity. The center is open to the public several days a week, and visitors can watch the artisans at work, take part in demonstrations and workshops, or check out live performances (Seville is, after all, the birthplace of flamenco).

If you’re planning a trip to Seville—and we hope you are; it’s a must-not-miss—plan to spend a few hours at Rompemoldes. You might just come away with an original piece of art or a decorative item for your home, but, more important, you’ll get to witness true innovation at work, Spanish style.
