Amazing Grates! Milan and Lake Como

I am just back from a week in Milan and Lake Como, where I was absolutely besotted by the Italians’ gift for grates. They make some great grates!

Of course, the need for as many grates as there are does speak to a need for security, but, honestly, they have elevated this unpleasant necessity to a decorative opportunity—and for centuries!

Simple but shapely.

Graceful and stately. Note that the top and bottom grate are different and full of decorative details.

I am late to this party, and every design made me ponder the artisans. What beautiful work! Thank you for sharing these pieces of art tucked into walls and doorways. So inspiring!
