Recycled, Reused, Re-loved: Rewined Candles

Living out here in the Berkshires, what with its strong back-to-the-earth culture, we’re always jazzed when we come across a fun new product that utilizes recycled components. And when that product not only looks great in our décor but also reminds us of one of our favorite libations, well, it’s a win-win for everyone.

Say hello to Rewined, a Charleston, South Carolina–based company that makes custom-scented candles in recycled wine bottles. Before you have traumatic flashbacks to those wonky melted tapers jammed into the necks of empty bottles on your college-dorm nightstand, have a closer look.

Rewined was founded a few years ago by Adam Fetsch, who, while working in a restaurant, became dismayed with all the wine bottles discarded on a weekly basis. He started collecting the bottles, and hit on a pretty cool idea for reworking the bottles into hand-poured candles. They took off almost immediately, so Adam turned it into a full-time business.

Rewined, which now manufactures about 1,400 candles per day, starts with those same empty bottles you find in recycling bins behind restaurants and even at your own house. First the tops are sawed off and the bottoms cleaned and dried. After wicks have been glued to the bottom, candle makers hand pour, one by one, a blend of premium melted soy wax and custom fragrances. The jars are then cleaned and labeled—including the signature of the candle maker—and affixed with cute little colored wax seals on the side. Rewined products even come nestled in eco-friendly, recyclable packaging, so there’s very little waste.

All this is great, but know what’s even better? The candles smell lightly—and delightfully—of wine, with all its complex undertones, from figs to mushrooms and flowers, and not even in the slightest like a bar just before closing. Rewined candles currently come in 10 scents, but the standouts for us include Rosé, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay (who knew it would smell better than it tastes?), and Merlot. They’re sold through a variety of retailers, but we prefer to get our wine on straight from the source and have it delivered to our door—perfect for all sorts of gifts, from birthdays and Mother’s Day to housewarming parties.

Aw, we’re blushing (okay, maybe it’s from the wine). Thank you so much for sharing Rewined with your readers and for the kind words on our candles! Cheers!
