Let’s Hear It for the Girls

AnnieOffice_2

As a successful, self-made entrepreneur, Annie knows the value of having a great support system that can help you achieve your goals. So when she heard about Girls Inc. of the Berkshires’ Go Girl campaign, she knew she wanted to take part—and, in the process, give young women a leg up in fulfilling their career dreams.

Girls Inc. of the Berkshires, an affiliate of the national Girls Inc. based in New York City, runs all sorts of amazing leadership programs for young women, and Go Girl is no exception. To date, it has raised nearly half of its $1 million fund-raising goal—including a donation from The Annie Selke Companies—with the money going toward research-based prevention programs, such as teen pregnancy prevention; self-defense and domestic violence prevention; economic literacy; and other educational efforts that encourage girls to master physical, intellectual, and emotional challenges.

Kelly Marion, Chief Executive Officer of the Gladys Allen Brigham Community Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where Girls Inc. is based, says, “We need our girls to be strong, healthy, smart, educated, bold, and independent. Girls have so many obstacles to overcome in their lives, and having this support shows them that they, too, have the potential to aspire to become a highly successful female entrepreneur like Annie Selke.”

So last month, Kelly put together a group of ambitious young women, who visited our offices for a behind-the-scenes tour of Pine Cone Hill, Dash & Albert Rug Company, and Fresh American. They also sat down for a down-to-earth chat with Annie on what it takes to be a successful businessperson. Annie was thrilled with the response, as well as the depth and thoughtfulness of the girls’ questions. She says, “I am a home-grown Berkshire ‘girl,’ and there is nothing closer to my heart than helping young Berkshire women achieve their dreams. I once read a quote that said, ‘Do what you love, and money will follow.’ Hopefully this program and the opportunity for them to meet with local entrepreneurs will teach girls to find out what they love. From where I sit, this is the first, critical step in living a happy and productive life.”
