Knitting Pretty: Loopy Mango

Break out the chunky knits: fall is here, and it’s never looked cooler than with a Loopy Mango scarf or wrap draped around your shoulders, or a lofty wool throw tossed over the back of the sofa or the foot of the bed.

We first came across this couture-caliber knitting and crocheting company at the Brimfield Antique Show, and were immediately smitten with their unbelievably soft, cushy merino wool. That’s thanks to Big Loop, the thickest yarn on the market, which the Loopy Mango crew produces in their mill in Brimfield, Massachusetts.

The company was founded by Waejong Kim, a native of Korea and former foreign-language interpreter and restaurant owner, and Russian-born Anna Pulvermakher, who used to work as a software test engineer for Microsoft and Expedia. Both quit their longtime jobs for creative pursuits and attended FIT, where they met in 2003. Loopy Mango—named for Waejong’s German shepherd, Loopy, and orange tabby cat, Mango—opened its doors the following year.

These days, Loopy Mango products include statement-making scarves, cowls, wraps, hats, and jackets (how incredible is that Little Monster’s jacket?), all rendered in Waejong and Anna’s signature large-looped and rope-knit styles. They’re investment pieces, but worth the price for the top-notch, made-by-loving-hands quality.

Loopy Mango products are available online and in more than a hundred specialty stores worldwide, as well as at their flagship store in Soho, New York. And if you’re more of the DIY type, you can purchase kits—complete with yarn, knitting needles, a carrying tote, and pattern—to make your own versions of all their products.
