Go See Girl Rising. Really.

“One girl with courage is a revolution,” says the tagline for Girl Rising, a new documentary from Oscar-nominated director Richard Robbins. And while we don’t often pay attention to movie taglines—most aren’t exactly, well, let’s just say truthful—this one got Annie’s attention, and with good reason. She saw the film during June’s Berkshire International Film Festival and was mesmerized, and has been spreading the word ever since.

Girl Rising profiles nine extraordinary girls from different countries, like Sokha, an orphan found—literally—in a dump in Cambodia who managed to make her way to school, where she’s now a star student, and Azmera, a 13-year-old Ethiopian who refused an arranged marriage and now is working toward becoming a teacher and community activist. The bravery and unbreakable spirit of these amazing girls is brought to life through the narration of actresses like Cate Blanchett, Freida Pinto, Kerry Washington, Anne Hathaway, and Meryl Street, who detail tear-jerking back stories and show how education really does have the power to change the world, one child at a time.

The documentary also ran on CNN on June 16 and 22, with people around the country hosting viewing parties at their local libraries, community centers, school, restaurants, and private homes. Girl Rising is a must-see, so check out the film’s website to find a screening near you. And check out the film’s Facebook page for tons of updates and some terrific behind-the-scenes photos.
