Smart Solutions for How to Hide Electrical Cords

Electricity: Can’t live without it, but we’d definitely love to toss the unsightly cords littering our floors and walls and mucking up some otherwise clean interior design. We went in search of the best ways to hide electrical cords in your décor, and we found some pretty ingenious solutions. From the simple (foam core!) to the elaborate (get a load of that 3-D braided “sculpture”), we’re ready to conceal those cords—sans plasticky faux-wood cord covers and miles of twist ties.

Solution1. Use a piece of plain foam core to give the illusion of a wireless wall. This works only if the wall and the foam core are the same color, but it doesn’t get much easier or more economical.

Solution 2. Install rain gutters under desktops and long console tables to suspend cords off the floor. With this trick, you can paint the gutters the same color as the wall, so the small amount that shows under the desktop blends in with the wall.

Solution 3. Get a cord-management kit. These handy little wranglers conceal electrical cords within systems of tubing you can custom shape to match your interior design, or stick them to the undersides of desks and tables, with only the barest hint of cord visible either near the outlet or the appliance input.

Solution 4. Incorporate your electrical-cord organizer into your room design. The Cable Bin from BlueLounge looks like a sleek trash can, but it’s actually a storage unit for all nearby cables and surge protectors.

Solution 5. Get crafty with trickier fixtures that aren’t clustered along a single computer or entertainment-center unit—think table lamps, alarm clocks, and small appliances like humidifiers. It’s amazing what some clear plastic sticky hooks and paintable, tube-shaped cord hiders can do. Simply affix them to the backs and legs of your furniture, and the cords practically disappear.

Solution 6. This problem solver isn’t for everyone, but we love the if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em ingenuity of making those often necessary extension cords look like artsy bits of your décor. A pair of scissors, some masking tape, yarn, and plastic cord tubes are all you need to DIY these sculptural cord covers.
