Know what? Holiday gifts are loads of fun, but dressing up for holiday parties makes us downright giddy. There’s something about pulling those rarely worn special-occasion pieces out of the closet and mixing them up with new accessories that never fails to put us in a festive mood. This year, we’re going full-on feminine with a blend of soft, easy, pretty pieces—and one knockout embroidered shawl.
The embroidered Indian Layla shawl isn’t just a gorgeous style statement; she’s also versatile enough to serve as a wrapped-around-the-shoulders shawl, a voluminous scarf, or a throw to toss over the legs during car and plane trips. All of these characteristics are great, but let’s face it: her looks are the real draw. Her bright red background is embellished with an ornate geometric pattern in alternating shades of plum, magenta, turquoise, cerulean, and rosy pink. And the embroidery is so finely rendered, we’d almost rather hang this scarf on our wall than wear it. Almost.
We played up the shawl’s red and plum tones with a vintage-look, lingerie-inspired maxi dress and a pair of chunky nude heels. Then we added a ladylike, double-breasted ivory and mohair coat in creamy ivory, because who doesn’t love to up the drama factor when they make an entrance to a party? Once we had our main pieces, it was simple to add in accessories in other colors from the shawl—a petite turquoise and silver beaded pouch, a stack of square jelly bangles in red and translucent ivory, and aquamarine drop earrings.
With clothes and accessories this color-drenched, we recommend going light on the makeup; a mostly bare face with a little mascara, deep plum lipstick, and pearly grey nail polish are all this party outfit needs.
