Annie’s Color Crush: Pompeian Red

Annie travels to Italy every year for business (tough gig, we know), but this year, she wanted to incorporate more tourist fun into the mix. At the top of her list: a visit to Pompeii.  Beyond the astoundingly well-preserved ruins themselves, which date to 79 A.D., Annie was taken with this ancient city’s extraordinary architecture and art—including many frescoes that feature a gorgeously vibrant color we now call Pompeiian red.

While experts say that this unique orangey-brick hue started off life as ochre—the searingly hot gas that preceded the eruption of Mount Vesuvius is to thank for turning the color into the rich red we see today—however it came into being, it’s a visual marvel. Sophisticated and arresting Pompeian red is full of warmth and energy, and is actually easier to decorate with than you might think. Paint manufacturers offer a variety of shades inspired by Pompeian red, from wine and brown-brick tones to hot red-orange shades.
