Annie is a confessed fabric addict. She’s seen (and even collected; we have the proof) it all on her many travels, and she could talk a blue streak on the topic. In between the high-end silks from India, the timeless wools from Italy, and the cotton batiks from Africa, there’s one fabric she comes back to time and again: linen.
What is it about linen—especially linen bedding—that Annie is so smitten with? For starters, it’s super durable, and with proper care lasts for many years. It’s breathable and provides warmth without the bulk, and in lighter weaves is even the perfect stay-cool layer for hot climates. It’s versatile, boasting a texture and drape that works well with just about any other bedding. Linen also gets softer wash after wash. And it now comes in so many colors and weights that you can find the perfect linen bedding for any style and any season. Here’s a quick guide to the different weights of linen and how to use them in your bedroom design:
Lightweight linen is flowy and a bit sheer. It’s perfect for creating an ethereal, romantic look (think white, ivory, and pastels) or a beachy paradise (think marls, patterns, and sun-washed tones like coral and citrus).
Midweight linen has a more substantial feel. It typically comes in tailored styles, making it a versatile choice for contemporary decorating and for men’s or shared male-female rooms.
Heavyweight linen has a beautiful texture that looks sophisticated when mixed with smooth cottons and silks for spring and summer, or with toasty fleece and lighter-weight linens for fall and winter. The warmest of the three linens, it can be used all year long with a few simple switch-outs.
