How to Make a Holiday Gift Basket for Dog Lovers

dogs (4 of 4)

To put it simply, our pets are our family. And we’re not the only ones who think this way, will millions of pet lovers across the world looking for info and products that can help them pamper their pets and help them live their healthiest, happiest lives. If you’ve got a dog lover in your family or circle of friends, then we’ve got the ultimate holiday gift: the dog lover’s gift basket, complete with treats, toys, bedding, and all sorts of accessories both two-footers and four-footers are bound to love.

  1. Start with a sturdy canvas storage bin. Not only will this serve as cute “wrapping” for your gift, but it can be reused for a multitude of storage needs—including dog toys and supplies. We chose one in a fun print that works in virtually any room of the house, from the living room to the mudroom.

  1. Splurge on a well-made dog bed. It’s tempting to pick up an inexpensive bed from the nearest big-box store—“It’s for a pet, after all,” people often tell us. “He isn’t exactly discerning about what he snoozes on!”—but we can tell you from experience that those beds rarely stand up to daily use and, in fact, start to develop holes and snags within a few months of purchase. Instead, put your hard-earned bucks toward a durable, drool-proof, accident-proof indoor/outdoor dog bed that can be taken outside or put in a tub and scrubbed and rinsed free of any liquids or stains.

  1. Add in a woven cotton throw. True, a dedicated dog bed should do the trick for your four-footer. But if she’s anything like our dogs, she goes where her mood takes her—which often means the sofa, armchair, car seat, or wherever else we might be sitting. Protect your furniture and cuddle in comfort with an easy-care, washable cotton throw.

  1. Remember: a new collar is always a welcome gift. Pets notoriously go through collars—even the so-called indestructible poly variety—like humans go through socks. Since this is a gift, we suggest buying a beautifully made design that your giftee might not pick up for himself. We love R. Riveter’s handmade, hand-vegetable-dyed leather Willie collar—named after General Patton’s dog, William the Conqueror, so your friend’s dog can channel a bit of badassery while also looking like the duke of the dog park.

  1. Treat your sweetie. Sure, most dogs will eat just about anything, from paper towels to twigs and that, ahem, indistinguishable bit of fur and teeth you walked past on the roadside. But that doesn’t mean you should feed them anything but the best-quality treats. Our favorites: Whole Life Originals single-ingredient treats, “farm to friend” snacks made with human-grade, freeze-dried meats that not only prevent pets from being exposed to harmful chemicals and preservatives, but also help reduce the risk of allergic reaction to unhealthy fillers. And these handmade Dog Cannolis from Tasty Pet Treats—baked with all-natural ingredients, including yogurt and wheat flour—might not last long around your canine companion, but while they’re still around, they look pretty darn cute stored under a cake dome on the countertop.

  1. Toy with their affections. We’ve never met a dog who didn’t love to chomp, drool, or sleep on a favorite toy, or toss it around like a graduation cap. And since dogs also love to tote their trophies from room to room, those toys spend a whole lot of up-close-and-personal time up against sensitive teeth, gums, and tongues. Because of this, we recommend including in your gift basket a nonchemically treated, hypoallergenic toy, like these stuffed fleece bones from Sit. Stay. Forever. Everything this forward-thinking company makes is certified toxin-free—which means a lowered risk of feline and canine cancers, and a much happier, healthier dog.

  1. Book ’em. Pet lovers can’t get enough of books about pets and and photos of pets, and nothing thrills them more than a combination of the two. We haven’t seen a more touching, more artistic book that also makes us smile than Amanda Jones’s Dog Years, which became a viral phenomenon just a few months ago after appearing right here on Fresh American (and UK’s The Guardian online. But, frankly, we’re taking credit for it, because we know Amanda personally and have been writing about her inimitable talents for years, as in this post and this one. Beat that, Brits).

My husband and I are new puppy parents – we have a 7mo Bernese Mountain Dog and enamored with our little (not so little) guy! We’re outdoor lovers, health enthusiasts, supporter of small business owners and would love this gift basket this holiday season! A healthy treat, a throw that actually works perfectly in our living room, a much better looking dog bed and finally place to store all his puppy toys.. Check out my instagram for our adventures with our boy Emmett 🙂

My Dad passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly on October 25th. He has just adopted a brindle hound pup from a local shelter that my siblings and I now care for. Her name is Ducky. This would be her welcome to her new home gift <3
