DIY Holiday Décor: Yarn-Bombed Branches

We’re always on the hunt for holiday how-to’s that are simple, cheerful, and a little off the beaten path. And since our love affair with yarn bombing is still going strong, ever since we yarn-bombed this headboard, we thought, Why not apply it to holiday décor? Enter our exclusive take on yarn-bombed branches.

We love this DIY for a number of reasons. It’s relatively quick to do, depending on the number and size of the branches you’re yarn bombing. It requires no special skills other than the ability to cut and wrap yarn and tie knots. And with yarn being so plentiful online and in every craft store, not to mention fallen twigs and branches all over our yards, it’s easy—and incredibly inexpensive—to find all the materials you need to make it happen.

For this how-to, we went with a mix of saturated colors for fall, but you can easily shake up the palette for any season. You could even create an ombré effect by starting with a dark color and wrapping down the stick with increasingly lighter colors. Or if you want a full-on glitzy take for Christmas and New Year’s, pick up some metallic gold and silver yarn to create a classic two-tone holiday palette.

Now let’s get bombing.

What you’ll need:

Yarn in the colors of your choice

Material scissors

Sticks or small branches

Glue (Elmer’s is a good bet)

How to do it:

  1. Cut different lengths of each yarn you plan to use. There’s no exact formula for this; the less regular the pattern, the better.

  1. Starting about 1.5 inches from one end of the branch, wrap the first yarn color around the branch and knot it securely.

  1. Holding the loose end of the yarn in place with your thumb, wrap the long part of the yarn tightly over the knot and loose end. Keep wrapping, covering the loose end completely.

  1. Continue wrapping the yarn tightly over the branch, going over and around any branch offshoots.

  1. When you get to the end of the length of the first yarn, knot it securely. You will have another loose yarn end to cover; this is okay, so don’t trim it.

  1. Begin wrapping the second color of yarn over the end of the first, repeating the steps above.

  1. One you’ve covered the branch completely with yarn, squeeze a small bead of glue onto your finger or a popsicle stick, and apply the glue to the yarn at each end of the branch, to prevent it from unraveling.
