Home Decorating Switch It Up

Switch It Up

In our opinion, there isn’t a single place in a room that can’t be considered decorating real estate. The big elements—walls, floors, trim, and molding—may get all the love, but we like to think small, so we’ve added an extra dash of vibrancy to our office with these switch plates covered in Japanese washi paper.

Like the look, but don’t want to wait to order the washi? Try origami or lighter-weight craft papers, both of which are available at most craft stores. For the plates, use the basic, inexpensive, smooth plastic type sold at any hardware store. Then follow these steps.

Place the paper facedown and put the switch plate, also facedown, on top; measure a 5” x 6” rectangle around the switch plate.

Trace the openings for the screws and switch.

Flip the switch plate over mark the rounded edges at the top and bottom on the paper. Mark a straight line to connect the bottom edges, the top edges, and the sides.

Cut out the rectangle of paper.

With an X-Acto knife, cut an X through the center of the switch hole, and use the tip of the knife to open the screw holes.

Align a ruler from the middle of one rounded-edge corner diagonally to the corner of the paper. With the X-Acto knife, slice an opening. Repeat on each of the three other corners.

Gently crease the paper along the straight markings for the top and bottom rounded edges.

Brush a light, even layer of Mod Podge onto the back side of the paper.

Position the switch plate, facedown, within the markings. Press down to adhere.

Fold the paper over the back edges of the switch plate.

Clip off the excess paper at the four corners.

Fold the flaps of the X through the switch hole and tack in place with a bit of Mod Podge.

Brush a light, even layer of Mod Podge over the right side of the finished switch plate, and allow to dry completely.
