Sewn Together: Lisa K. Tharp Beach House Inspiration

We’re always on the hunt for innovative decorating ideas, so when we saw this eye-catching area rug treatment courtesy of interior decorator Lisa K. Tharp, we let out a collective ooh and aah. In her design for a stunning beach house on Cape Cod, Lisa came across an enviable challenge: how to choose a rug for a light-filled, expansive living room that sees its share of sandy feet and muddy-puppy messes? The answer: sew together several durable indoor/outdoor rugs to create the look of one huge, custom carpet that can withstand regular cleaning.

Lisa says, “I wanted to do something textural, and the navy and white rug seemed like a perfect match. And the woven rope is so fantastically but subtly nautical, it just seemed right for the design plan.” So she consulted the pros at Comina in Concord, Massachusetts, where they suggesting how to best align the edges of four 8.5’ by 11’ Dash & Albert woven rope rugs to keep the texture consistent throughout. Williston Weaves of Newton, Massachusetts, then hand-sewed the rugs and bound the edges with vegan leather for a bit of polish.

The blue-and-white palette is the ideal, high-contrast backdrop for the home, whose owners love to show off their collection of art and sculpture. To freshen up the traditional coastal pairing, Lisa is selecting furniture with clean lines, as well as a few darker, grounding pieces to keep the space from feeling too lightweight. And although she hadn’t expected it, the seams of the rug have become a major design element in the room. “Because they form a cross, it becomes an opportunity to place the furniture differently to highlight it,” Lisa explains.
