Pastels are kind of a given for spring. And while we do love the lightness they bring to a room, we’re also ready to break out of the pastel throw-pillow and quilt rut and try those pale, sun-washed hues in some unexpected places. Case in point: these new pastel rugs, which manage to look both sweet and sophisticated, and come in constructions from casual woven cotton to upscale hooked wool.
Floors can be some of the darker surfaces in our homes, and for these spaces, a soft-as-a-spring-breeze pastel rug is the perfect way to lighten up without refinishing, or add a bit of much-needed contrast. But toss a pastel rug over a blond wood or whitewashed floor, and the effect is equally memorable—easygoing, soothing, and a Scandinavian chic.
Pastel rugs might be a little harder to care for in super-high-traffic spaces, like the living room, where they’re not quite as good at camouflaging dirt as their darker-hued sisters. Still, frequent vacuuming and the occasional spot cleaning usually do the trick, so we have yet to shy away from decking out family room floor with a pale-hued rug. That said, we’re smitten with the calm elegance they lend to bedrooms, from the master to the nursery; home offices; hallways; and even bathrooms and kitchens.
There’s something spectacular about a pastel pattern in a lush micro-hooked wool and a large-size rug, but indoor/outdoor and woven cotton are the affordable way to go if you just want to shake up your decorating for the season. Just pick one or more patterns and complementary hues in similar profiles, and arrange them with furniture to create conversation or play areas. Then swap them out with more saturated shades as the seasons change.
