Easy (and Pretty) Peony Arrangements

14Annie'sParty_Peonies4_Blog

For her recent Memorial Day party, Annie wanted fresh flower arrangements that would make her table look festive and beautiful, but that still had a casual attitude and were easy to put together. So she turned to her favorite spring flower, the peony, with its bright, showy blooms and feathery texture. Then she chose an assortment of clear glass vases and containers, a bit of greenery for contrast and some woody flowering branches, and created the ultimate party decorations. Here’s how to get the look at home.

What you’ll need:

  • Florist’s scissors or garden shears
  • Assorted glass vases and containers; keep them short, so guests can see over them at the table
  • Peonies in a mix of medium and hot pink; figure up to 6 flowers per vase
  • Your favorite greenery and flowering branches
  • Clear florist’s tape

How to do it:

1. Fill the sink or a bucket with cool water. Cut the peony stems underwater to the desired length; you want them to be about 2 to 3 inches taller than the height of the vessels you’ll be using. Set the cut flowers aside in a water-filled vase or bowl.

2. Cut the greenery stems and flowering branches so that the greenery will extend up past the flowers by at least a couple of inches. Set aside.

3. Using clear florist’s tape, create a grid over the top of the vase; wrap the ends of the tape just over the edge of the vase. The grid will help hold the flowers in place.

3. Choose the mix of flower colors and shapes for each; aim for 4 to 6 flowers per vase. Arrange the flowers inside, leaning the heavier blooms against the side of the vase and standing the lighter ones up in between. Add a sprig or two of greenery for contrast.

I loved this “how-to” post so much I’ve included it in my latest post Fabric and Flowers – Peonies. I thought my readers would enjoy learning how to arrange these beauties. They’re so New England.

Happy Weekend!
